The True Value of a Travel Specialist: How the personal touch makes all the difference

Traditionally, the Louvre in Paris is firmly fermé on a Tuesday. But this isn’t always the case. For me, the moment when we were able to give NoteWorthy guests private, out of hours access to this most public of spaces epitomises what’s so special about a bespoke travel experience; how truly personal, how exclusive, how immersive and how one-of-a-kind it can be.

A curated travel experience opens closed doors, lifts the velvet rope, invites you into the screen, and makes memories that belong to you and you alone.

When a guest commissions us to curate their trip, they’re seeking much more than destination knowledge. They’re looking for one-off moments that go far beyond guidebooks and traditional ‘touring’. Instead, our travel specialists turn to our own contact book, unlocking doors to experiences that will really connect with people on a personal level. I like to think of it like a perfectly mixed cocktail: carefully measured, with intuition and a good dash of creativity to shake things up when needed.

It all stems from my own experiences of travel. Whenever I visit an iconic location or an historic landmark, I want to go behind the scenes. I want to see what’s tucked away in the vaults, to meet the cultural custodians, to smell the scent of centuries-old cigar smoke, to hear stories told by the people who were there in the room where it happened. So this is why I encourage our NoteWorthy team to always dig deeper. It could be seeing London’s Trooping the Colour from the inside, a candlelit dinner with a Laird and Lady in a private Scottish castle or coastal fossil hunting with a modern Mary Anning.

In the hands of our guides

A careful mix of meticulous planning and on-the-ground agility is the real sweet spot for curated travel experiences. In the hands of our expert guides, those experiences become richer and more personal. True raconteurs, a well-matched guide doesn’t simply know the terrain. They know just when to lead, when to pause and when a well-timed coffee is needed… as well as where to get one. They know the places that have tales to tell, and the people to tell them.

Because, when our guests return home, they almost always talk to us, or their travel advisor, about the characters they encountered and the stories they hear. Often, it’s the chat with the Household Division soldier in their private audience that they reflect on after the Changing of the Guards. Sharing fresh shellfish is always wonderful, but shucking just-caught shellfish with the Irish oyster catcher who wades the seas his ancestors have trawled for generations? That’s truly unforgettable. After all, it’s the memorable characters we meet and the meaningful connections we make that stay with us long after a journey ends.
