Travel Making Change: Why my favourite experiences leave a lasting legacy

Published

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of visiting the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. Stepping out of the car park, my eye was immediately caught by the sea of red bricks stretching from the multi-storey to the entrance and beyond. Each of these 55,000 bricks bears an individual’s name to commemorate the WWII generation, creating a moving ‘Road to Victory’. It’s a powerful way to honour the sacrifice and the stories of those involved.

The experience illuminated a wider truth: simply by visiting this poignant museum, visitors were helping to preserve this legacy and contribute to a meaningful cause.

That same thread of travel making change runs through so many of our experiences at NoteWorthy. Our journeys are always enriching and inspiring for guests. But they also serve a deeper purpose: to protect heritage, traditions, art and craftsmanship that might otherwise be lost.

I’m a firm believer that travel should have a positive impact. Not just seeing sights, but supporting the people and places that matter.

SAFEGUARDING THE GUARDS

One of our most talked-about experiences is the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. We love taking guests behind the scenes where they get to see (and often meet) the King’s personal guard, before giving them special access to The Guards Museum. This small but fascinating museum is dedicated to preserving the Royal Collection and honouring the Guardsmen, and these visits help keep their unique stories alive.

FOLLOWING YOUR LEAD

When we’re planning an itinerary, we encourage our designers to be thoughtful, creative and, above all, personal, and this extends to the impact we can make

If you’re drawn to history, we help you preserve archaeological sites or protect fossil collections. If you’re passionate about horses, you could step into the stables that care for protected breeds. Or if you’re tracing your family’s lineage, we can follow in your ancestors’ footsteps from farms in Ireland to the beaches of Normandy. It’s these personal connections that make experiences not just memorable, but more meaningful for everyone involved.

PAWS FOR THOUGHT

Like our guests, I’m passionate about supporting causes that feel personal. As a self-confessed dog obsessive, I’m proud to partner with the Dogs Trust. I recently enjoyed introducing guests to Charlie the Labrador at Edinburgh’s Dogs Trust rehoming centre, a pup with a very personal story to tell.

Guests’ visits have also helped us make contributions to the Iveagh Trust and St George’s Society of New York, charities that do vital work to help the most vulnerable in society.

Over the years, we’ve hosted gala dinners and fundraising events for these causes, but often it’s those ‘New Orleans’ moments that we strive to achieve. Small but powerful moments that inspire change and leave a legacy that lasts long after the flight home.
